What are Side Plates - Emtek keyed entry Side Plates are reproductions representing the dimensions of the hardware from the period they were originally manufactured and used. Careful preparation must be taken on modern doors to utilize keyed entry side plates because today's standards have changed a bit from the period of side plates.

Installation Requirements - Two holes 2 1/8" are required, one for the deadbolt mechanism and one for the lever/knob. These two holes MUST be spaced 3 5/8" from center to center (see Fig. 1 below). Each hole is standard door prep (see Fig. 2 below). If your door is already drilled and the two holes measure anything other than 3 5/8" from center to center, then keyed entry side plates WILL NOT WORK for you. If you are purchasing non-keyed entry side plates (passage, privacy, or patio functions), don't let this scare you because only one hole is required for non-keyed entry side plates so there are no spacing requirements.

If you have a modern door or you are buying an off-the-shelf door from a home center and it is drilled for a knob and deadbolt, most likely the spacing between the two holes will be the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard of
5 1/2" center to center and keyed entry side plates WILL NOT WORK for you.

If you are custom ordering new doors you can provide the vendor or your builder with the below drilling specifications in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. You must take great care in your communication with the builder or door manufacturer because our experience is, there is frequently a lack of communication between the home owner and the builder or door manufacturer and the doors are delivered drilled for modern ANSI standards. This leaves you with door hardware that will not work with your new doors.

At the time you place your order, you will be asked to verify that your doors meet the installation requirements for this product, as per Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 below, and that you understand the Emtek Product Return Policy. If not verified, your order will be delayed until we receive e-mail confirmation that your bore dimensions are correct for this product. It is important that you accurately measure the below dimensions on your door. Guessing or assumptions will only cause you delays and cost you unnecessary money if you receive your keyed side plate only to discover existing dimensions on your door are not correct for the product.
